New Jack’s Beans brand launch set to stir up on-the-go coffee market

Created in response to the growing demand for barista quality coffee on-the-go, the Jack’s Beans Coffee Company has been developed by the team at Smiths News to support the company’s diversification strategy.

The launch of Jack’s Beans coffee bar not only represents a significant investment by Smiths News but also a fresh opportunity for community-based retailers to access the lucrative coffee shop market, estimated to be worth over £1.4bn.

“Jack’s here to help independent retailers to grow their business,” says Jonathan Bunting, Smiths News Managing Director. “The aim is to quickly establish the Jack’s Beans Coffee Company brand as a familiar face in locations up and down the country, building growth through a community-centric philosophy that creates a path to profit for retailers and rewards loyalty on a local level,” he explains.

Designed with local retailers in mind, the Jack’s Beans unmanned coffee bar measures just 500mm in width, thanks to an impressive space-saving design. The ‘pay at till’ machines will be capable of serving 100 drinks per day and enable retailers to boost incremental revenue with minimal staff maintenance required.

Over half of consumers interviewed during the brand development research phase for Jack’s Beans found the idea of purchasing ‘coffee shop’ quality coffee from a local store appealing. “The daily take-away coffee is now considered so vital to many people’s routine that it’s become a ‘non-negotiable’ treat,” Bunting adds.

Launching with a range of six variants, Jack’s Beans will cost £2 per serve, made using Fairtrade Espresso coffee beans and fresh milk.

“First and foremost, Jack’s Beans is all about the taste,” says Bunting. “We have invested a significant amount of time and energy behind both the product and delivery system. The result is the kind of “barista-style” coffee customers have come to expect from high-street coffee shops, but in a convenient format.”

The first Jack’s Beans coffee bars have already been trialled, with the brand now set to begin roll out of its self-service machines to independent retailers supported by Smiths News.

Members of Jack’s sales team are visiting retailers to communicate the retail proposition, sign up stores to take Jack’s coffee bars and distribute a comprehensive package of POS material to help them get behind Jack’s Beans.

Today’s announcement represents the first of a number of diversification ideas currently under development within Smiths News as part of its aspirations to transform the business from purely a newspaper and magazine wholesalers into an organisation that offers retailers a range of products and services throughout its core and secondary markets.
