“It’s an inclusive company where you’re encouraged to speak up and share your opinions, and it genuinely feels like your voice matters.”

I’ve been with Smiths News for over 15 years, working part-time (30 hours a week), which allows me to maintain a healthy work-life balance while continuing to grow professionally. This balance is very important to me as a parent to two young boys. Although I am based at Head Office, I spend some time working from home in a 60:40 hybrid arrangement. HR can sometimes seem a bit doom and gloom, but dealing with problems is just a small part of it.
There is a huge amount of work around developing colleagues, promoting them and helping them to grow.
On a day-to-day basis, I liaise with managers and generate a great deal of correspondence across the board, from communications on absences to first line HR support to highlighting the benefits we have in place to support our colleagues physical and mental wellbeing and to save them money, no day is the same!
One of my favourite things about working for Smiths News is the friendly atmosphere, whether I’m at Rowan House or out on site, everyone is so welcoming and approachable. It’s an inclusive company where you’re encouraged to speak up and share your opinions, and it genuinely feels like your voice matters. It’s also really rewarding to be part of a business that’s so successful and continually moving forward.
My two boys like to play football, so I’m very much a football mum. I watch them play on Saturdays and Sundays, cheering from the sidelines. I also like to crochet and socialise with friends.
My advice to my younger self would be it’s okay not to have it all figured out. You don’t need to know exactly what you want to do or where you want to be right away. Give yourself the space to explore different roles and interests, each experience will teach you something valuable and bring you closer to the path that feels right for you.
